Las Médulas, Spain
The unusual landscape of Las Médulas has been attributed to the Romans, as it was the most important gold mine. The miners also built an intricate system of aqueducts and canals to force flowing water through the landscape. Las Médulas is about a 4-hour drive from Madrid. Las Médulas is mainly known for its orange rocks and breathtaking views.
Meteora, Greece
On almost inaccessible sandstone peaks you will find the buildings of Meteora. You can reach the monasteries via a staircase with more than 140 steps, but the steps are carved on the side of the cliff, so hold on tight! Meteora has 6 'floating' monasteries.
Excursions to the monasteries are organized from various touristic coastal towns. Originally there were 24 monasteries, but currently only six are inhabited by monks. Two monasteries still maintain the monastic regime and the other four are museums and tourist sites. The history of this fairytale-like area goes back to the end of the 11th century.
